BRONX INDEPENDENT LIVING SERVICES (BILS) is a community based non profit organization that offers education, counseling and advocacy for people with all types of disabilities. BILS works to increase the opportunities for people with disabilities in mainstream society. We are currently recruiting for a Crime Victims Counselor.
Position: Crime Victims Counselor
Salary: $14,861 salary is for 20 hours per week. Additional hours may be available. BILS also offers free health insurance, life insurance and other benefits as well.
Responsibilities: The Crime Victims (CV) Counselor is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of Crime Victims Services for victims of crime with or without disabilities by providing peer counseling, crisis intervention, and advocacy to crime victims and their families, both individually, and in groups. S/he is responsible in planning and conducting outreach activities. The CV Counselor is also responsible in assisting to organize and run workshops on issues affecting people with disabilities who are victims of crime. S/he is responsible for educating and advocating for victims at other victims’ agencies as well as educating criminal justice personnel about issues affecting people with disabilities. S/he maintains and prepares case notes, monthly and quarterly reports as well as maintains consumer records and updates them as needed. The CV Counselor also represents BILS at community meetings, hearings, etc. The CV/DV Program Manager may assign other duties as needed.
Qualifications: B.A. and 2 years counseling experience in Domestic Violence/ Crime Victims, and a basic understanding of issues important to people with disabilities. Bilingual is strongly preferred. S/he must be organized and able to meet deadlines, has the ability to work well with diverse populations, and the ability to become a member of a team. Candidate should possess good oral and written skills and maintain case files and produce weekly summaries in a timely fashion.
